The Distributive Entailments of Collective Predicates
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper deals with predicates that allow both collective and dis-tributive construals when combined with a plural subject. I present evidence that even on the collective construal, these predicates entail downward from groups to their members, and use this result as the basis of an attempt to resurrect Har-nish's pragmatic analysis of exhaustiveness ((Harnish, 1976]). I then incorporate the distributive subentailments of Dowty, 1986] to extend the account to \team credit" predication. Finally, I ooer some speculations about the impact of these conclusions on the expression of the cooperative/distributive distinction in terms of event semantics. 1 Background For the purposes of this paper, I will distinguish between types of predica-tional expressions, using the following terminology: (20.1) Type I: cannot be applied to individuals 1 A. pure cardinality (e.g. be numerous) B. pure collective (e.g. gather, meet, see each other) Type II: applicable to individuals A. mixed (e.g. lift the piano, write a paper) B. pure distributive (e.g. die, be asleep) This paper will focus on the application of mixed predicates to plural subjects , which allows both distributive and collective construals. Intuitively, 1 The two subclasses of Type I can be distinguished by the felicity of their combination with all: cf. the men all gathered vs. *the men are all numerous.

Interpretation: Potentially ambiguous predicates are interpreted collectively by the processor ⇒ garden-...
متن کاملAtom Predicates and Set Predicates: Towards a General Theory of Plural Quantification
The interpretation of sentences with plural determiners and collective predicates is a highly complex problem that has not been sufficiently investigated, despite many advances in theories of plurality and quantification. This paper proposes a new typology of predicates that serves as a basis for a general treatment of singular and plural noun phrases within generalized quantifier theory. Secti...
متن کاملResolving uncertainty in plural predication
Plural predications (e.g., "the boxes are heavy") are common sources of ambiguity in everyday language, allowing both distributive and collective interpretations (e.g., the boxes each are heavy vs. the boxes together are heavy). This paper investigates the role of context in the disambiguation of plural predication. We address the key phenomenon of "stubborn distributivity," whereby certain pre...
متن کاملResolution of Collective-Distributive Ambiguity Using Model-Based Reasoning
I present a semantic analysis of collective-distributive ambiguity, and resolution of such ambiguity by model-based reasoning. This approach goes beyond Scha and Stallard [17], whose reasoning capability was limited to checking semantic types. My semantic analysis is based on Link [14, 13] and Roberts [15], where distributivity comes uniformly from a quantificational operator, either explicit (...
متن کاملNatural Language Plurals in Logic Programming Queries
This paper presents a representation for natural language plurals in knowledge base queries, implementing collective, distributive, cumulative, and multiply distributive senses of the plural by means of higher predicates. The underlying semantics is based on Franconi’s theory of collections. The collective reading of a plural applies the predicate to the whole collection; the distributive readi...
